So I posted a wee while ago about Relentless Negativity in the Blogosphere, and was super extra excited to see that someone had grabbed that baton and run with it, expressly my cousin in the Old Country, Shackleford Hurtmore, in this post. A little bit after reading that I read another post, completely unrelated, by Ciaran Norris... slightly different approach to the Relentless Negativity as it deals with all the communications from a particular sector, and not just the angry rants of frustrated bloggers. However, I rather think that he cleverly and wittily describes the way that I've been feeling, and I like the timeliness of it too... the idea that there is some kind of shift away from the negativity?
For almost as long as I’ve appreciated the warmth & kindness that comes from so many areas of this sector, I’ve also been rather disturbed by the number of people who seem to think that being rude, abrasive & aggressive is not only clever, but a smart marketing tool as well.
They think that being agressively macho in their manner both on, and offline, is somehow cool when all it really suggests is that they didn’t lose their virginity until they were 29.
They think that sarcasm is always funny, even when it’s snide & unkind, when all it does is show a lack of imagination.
They think that being shocking in order to gain attention shows a talent for marketing when it’s actually the digital equivalent of wetting the bed.
They think that gaining this attention, no matter what the cost, is a brilliant way to build a brand when all it really means is that you’re doomed to be a poisonous fish in a small pond for as long as your digital profile exists. You can read the whole article here. You should do it! It's well worth your time.
Also, I've started using my tumblr more often and posting tidbits during the day. I'm excited about it! It's easier to post during work hours. Today it meant that I managed to get a short rant off my chest about that hideous article on the front page of the Dominion Post - you know, about the young ladies who are "asking for it" - while my boss was on her morning tea break! Hah!
Oh, and also, hello to Laydeez who have come via The Handmirror *waves*.
*you may ask, "Why That Picture?" and I would reply "Meh. My cardigan smells weird".
