Investigative Blogging: No Shampoo

We Heart It

Unless you're living in an blogging bubble (guffaw) you've probably heard of the "No Poo" movement, a movement that has one of the worst.names.ever (and will thus be referred to as No Shampoo throughout this post). An extremely quick Wikipedia search reveals that the theory behind No Shampoo has two angles: trying to avoid the chemicals in shampoo, and rejecting commercialised standards of hair beauty. I am not a specialist on either of these arguments -- while I like the idea of trying to minimise the amount of mass produced chemicals that I voluntarily apply to my body, my main reason for turning away from shampoo is that I have no freaking money at all. Poverty is an exciting challenge, non?

The concept that not using shampoo might make your scalp and hair more healthy is not a completely foreign concept to me. My brother Josh was infamous in our family for not using shampoo at all, much to my mother's chagrin. The story goes that after months of shampoo-avoidance, he went to a hairdresser who told him that he had the healthiest hair and scalp they'd ever seen. I used to know a lot of hippies who would assure me that your hair actually begins to clean itself after it's been dirty for a while. I'm yet to find any evidence for this theory, but it is true that your scalp begins to limit the amount of sebum it produces if it's not completely stripped of oils.

For my own dip into the world of No Shampoo, I mostly followed the guide in this Hairpin article but padded out my information by looking at this Instructables tutorial. I bought a couple of plastic bottles from Plastic Box, filling one half with baking soda and half with water, and the other with water and a couple of tablespoons of ACV (that's apple cider vinegar, the wondercure, for non-hippie types). [FACT: You can get three kilos of baking soda from Moore Wilsons for only $5, which is much cheaper than the semi-hippie shampoo I was using earlier.]

Despite the depth of the information flying around, the process of removing shampoo from your beauty diet is very easy. Stage one involves replacing standard shampoo with a baking soda and vinegar treatment. The hair is washed with a baking soda and water solution - you need to really massage it into your scalp before smoothing it to the ends of your hair, and rinsing it thoroughly. The weak vinegar solution is used to rinse and condition your hair. I recommend rinsing your hair really thoroughly after this part of the process, because smelling like salt and vinegar crisps is not awesome.

Apart from the risk of smelling like a delicious snack, I found this part completely painful. I'd go so far as to say that I didn't notice any difference to speak of between the condition of my hair when washed with baking soda and vinegar, and the condition of it when washed with my standard natural-ish shampoo. Except that it was maybe softer?

Stage two was rather more tedious in that it requires giving up any kind of soap entirely, and washing the hair with nothing but warm water. This isn't so much washing as massaging one's progressively more greasy mop of hair under water daily. My head reached peak greasiness at day four and then pretty much maintained this level of dirtiness for four weeks. I took to brushing cornflour and baking soda through my dry hair in order to make it look less gross, but I swear I must of looked like a footman with all that powder in my hair.

I enlisted Shannon to smell my hair daily and advise me on how it smelt (can't stand the smell of dirty haired people) and he reported that it smelt good, like a person. In fact, he said, it smelt like Ginger. It's strange that the idea of your hair smelling like yourself has become such a foreign idea. Smelling like yourself is almost like an exposure - no layers of synthetic scent between you and the outside world.

In terms of appearance - well, I know it didn't look bad because my passport photo looks absolutely fine. I think that not-washing-one's-hair-with-anything-but-water is a conceptually dreadful thing rather than something that is truly disgusting. And damn it, if I'm challenging the commercial mores of shampoo, then I must be determined to go against the normalised image of the Pantene commercial! Yah! I spit at you Rachel Hunter.

Stage three is a blessed return to sanity, baking soda and AVC. This is your future routine: using the combination weekly or maybe more frequently if you're a greasier person (I'm a greasier person).

Two weeks into this last routine and I feel WONDERFUL. My hair is awesomely soft and manageable, with less flyaway bits. At present, I'm trying to stretch out washing my hair to every fourth or fifth day and leave it at that.

CONCLUSION: Stop using shampoo.

For serious, between the MoonCup, the No Shampoo and my crystal deodorant, I am some kind of hippie these days.

Happy Birthday Josh!

It's my little brother Josh's Birthday today! At any rate, I'm hoping that I've timed it so that it's November 11 in the UK as well. Today Josh is Twenty Seven. I can hardly believe it. Happy Birthday little bro! Hope you're having fun in Edinburgh xxx

Which one is which? Fun fact: you can't see up Josh's nose in this picture
Five things I really love about my little brother:
  • He gives great hugs. It's true! I could go a Josh hug now.
  • He's super sweet and generous - a great brother and son and boyfriend (I mean, I'm not sure about the boyfriend bit. But he looks pretty good from where I'm standing).
  • He cooks an awesome steak.
  • I also like his serious voice very much. When he means something he sounds like Dad and it's lovely.
  • He's not afraid of travel and it's really inspiring. When he hurt himself badly in Thailand (falling off a scooter) he just dealt with it. He was totally alone and he just sucked it up and dealt with the situation. I think that's pretty awesome.

Things I am loving...

I haven't done this for ages, and I do rather like it a lot. Have you had a chance to make your own list yet? Honestly, it's so much FUN. And Happiness often ensues...

  • Being back at Derby training. Despite the fact that I'm still working towards full strength and my frustration at my own physical limitations, it's really fantastic to be skating with the League again.
  • My brother is back from Overseas. I saw him tonight, and it was very nice to see him. Can't wait to hang out when we're both well rested!
  • Hugging a happy Dad.
  • Long weekend... Wellington Anniversary tomorrow. So not only have I had the chance to complete some pressing Important Things (i.e. Stuff for Derby and vacuuming my thread-strewn room) but I've managed to fit in an exceptionally lazy day too. Excellent.
  • Walking in the sun, and listening to the Ruby Suns, and seeing a small boy in a striped scarf chasing pigeons.
  • Phone calls from the Boy in Auckland. I love hearing his voice.
  • Dinner and trashy movies with Nat: having Nat around after so many years is simply heavenly. I adore my girlfriends.
  • Rose-tinted lampshades and rose-scented incense and my Tibetan salt lamp. Its like living inside the huge peony of my dreams.
  • Blog comments from strangers that I feel as though I know from seeing on TV more than once.
  • Photos of my little cousin Zoe grinning toothily in an oversized Santa hat.
  • Anticipation: things in the post, the Mysterious Indian Parcel, First Bout on 28th March, the Great Far North Trip.

In which Sarah discusses the series of uncanny events that characterised the weekend just past

Saturday night: I ran into three or four people I hadn't seen in a very long time (very sweet Mariko and a drunken chat with Rita ex-honours), and was cornered by somebody I'd never met and probably shouldn't have! Yes! Shannon's ex-girlfriend came over to introduce herself and clear the air, because "she wasn't sure what I thought of her you know and she'd seen me around and stuff and she just thought she'd say hi because..." (insert drunken rant here...) I was, of course, paralysed by politeness, and after what felt like an interminably long time was forced to put an end to the conversation by saying how nice it was to meet her and I hope that she had a good evening, before pronouncedly turning my back to her and starting a conversation with Bex who was watching Al's band and standing next to me. Bizarre and awkward situation to say the least. Uncannily, I saw Colin the next day and he reported a similar situation with his boyfriend's ex (ie unsolicited and drunken communication) although his story involved more hollow and violent threats on the part of the ex. So, I'd like to state for the record, that I will not be stalking Andy's new girlfriend when she arrives in NZ and I will not corner her drunkenly anywhere and will not say or do anything to her that could be misconstrued as creepy or stalkerish. She is of no interest to me. Despite her fascinating love of puppies.

Sunday afternoon involved a huge premenstrual/over tired meltdown, walking the streets of Newtown during the fair with tears streaming down my face under my sunglasses because I was Lost! and Alone! and it was like Ruth laughed at me on the phone, and although I know it was just general Derby AGM hysteria, in my premenstrual overtired anxiety spiral paranoid overwrought state it was just enough to send me into torrents of tears which then, of course, become about EVERYTHING ELSE wrong in my life... Josh rang later to tell me he'd left the key on the dining table and was going to Dad's house and when he asked me how my day was I don't think he was listening when I told him that it was fucking dreadful... thus didn't make any comment. He was here when I got home though, so I could bawl my eyes out to him when he gave me a hug. Nice brother.

Tom's face has gone all weird from some kind of temporary palsy that has paralysed him on one side. When I first saw him I thought he'd had a stroke, which was a bit spooky. Also, his scooter was stolen this weekend. Scooter Stealer, a Pox on you and your family for seven generations! Meanwhile Tom looks a lot like Quasimodo but refuses point blank to let me refer to him as such. SO not fair.

Back from Drinks

so excuse any typos. I have to ask why it is that nearly everyone I know has had a shitty year... lots of awful things happening to them in terms of wombs and the male of the species and their general state of mental well being. With the exception of Anna and Alexis (who are about to get married- and are in Ak) and Fran (love!) most people in Welli seem to be experiencing a whole heap of shit. Bollocks if you will... I intended to go to what I assumed would be a raucous (sp?) and sceney kind of a party tonight but have chosen not to gate crash for various reasons. I wrote some angsty poetry, but really it's the kind of thing that you would maybe write in your diary with scented pens rather than share with innocent bystanders. Which leaves me with directing aforementioned innocent bystanders to my little brother's myspace page... The music is beyond appalling but he's a neat kid. I miss him.

Oh. I did write that

I kind of thought I'd just dreamed it. A little bit overexcited yesterday afternoon, because I decided to go to visit Wellington for a week (home!), sometime after my little brother visits me here before going to Germany. SO, September/October sometime.

My gut hurts. But I won't subject you to details.

I have about half an hour to waste before I meet Andy and Josh at the Bucket Fountain. I've spent all day shopping for an outfit for the wedding that suits my very specific requirements. When I can shop without boundaries my life is so much easier [woe is me, for I must go out and get myself in debt for a purpose]. Anyway, I look bloody awesome. Like a fairy, or a ballet dancer. And it's one less thing to worry about. The wind has picked up something awful and it keeps blowing my skirt up as I'm walking along the street. I forgot that the wind was so forceful here. I like the wind; nothing like a good blow through, eh? Still twenty minutes to waste. I could maybe write an email or something. Sometimes its just so much effort to muster my thoughts into any kind of semblance of... something. Can't think of a word. Feeling a little vague. Hey, Andy's been vague since we've been back. I think that its something that he's developed while we've been away. A funny thing being back... although I'm beginning to sort out my efforts and feelings and head a little. Being in a better space. I was REALLY grumpy yesterday, I blame the ECP. God I can't subject myself to this free-association post.

Gas

The other night I discovered finally and for sure that I must stop drinking as much (or as often) as I have been. After only two beers, I lay down and felt rather nauseous. Clearly no good, given the miniscule amount of alcohol that I had consumed. So, this is Absolutely It. I am going to give my poor, innocent little liver a break, at least until my birthday next month. Or, until the engagement party for Andy's sister the week before (may need some dutch courage methinks... other people's extended families are always so hard out.) I went out with Dad tonight, and I actually had a really good time. I think he's planning to drop out of society... quit Ministry of Defense and live in a van. His words were almost exactly "I haven't really seen much of the country." Still, all that matters to me is that he's happy, doing something that he feels is his own. He needs to find things to do that are outside of the family, he was always so reliant on Mum, my brothers and I to be his source of identity. I think that Dad is much more than this, but I guess its just him finding this out himself. At any rate, I'm not so sure that he is entirely hunky-dory (he never is), but at least he seems happier than he was before Christmas, and THAT can only be an improvement. We ran into Paul who is trying to convince him to speed date in "his age range"... Dad unimpressed that Paul would assume that he knew his age range, and found the whole concept of speed dating to be completely hideous. Can't wait to tell Josh, he will piss his pants laughing. I saw Mel today, she's back up to Auckland tomorrow and then away camping on Waiheke Island with Merryn next weekend. I am sooo jealous, I want to go away camping (I want a weekend). Lovely girl brought around a bottle of Manuka Honey flavoured 42 Below Vodka, which is delicious with Ginger Ale. Always found it hard to find a suitable mixture for that flavour. I always wish that Mel lived in town, she's fantastic. I wish that I could just do the things that she does, nothing seems to stand in her way, she just decides that she's going to do something and DOES IT. Like the exchange to Hungary, such a bizarre thing to decide to do. And the research scholarship. I should stop being jealous and just do things.
